Questions and Answers
This Q/A section is for those new to thyroid cancer
who have questions that they would like answered.
Hopefully my experiences will enable me to answer them
for you. If not then I hope someone viewing this site
will use the email
link and send me the relevant information so that I can
post it here.
Hi Glenda
I've been told I have to have a biopsy and some cells
taken from my thyroid gland. Any information you can
give me about this will be useful as I've not really
been told what this entails.
Thanks. Julie
Letchworth.
Hello Julie,
Thanks for being the first to pose a question here.
I never had a biopsy (I was told it wasn't needed!), but
as far as I know a fine needle is inserted into the
thyroid during an ultrasound scan, and some cells drawn
off which are then analysed in the laboratory.
Hello
I hope you can help with this question. I have to have
my first dose of RAI soon and so will have to come off
of my thyroxine for two weeks. I'd be grateful if you
can let me know what to expect.
Thanks. Lyn

Hi Lyn,
For the first week or so you won't feel much of a
difference. But during the second week as any
residual Thyroxine leaves the body you'll probably feel
cold, tired, and maybe you'll put on a bit of weight
even though you'll have a decreased appetite. The
last few days before your RAI your calf muscles will be
quite painful when you try and walk, your eyes may have
trouble focusing, and your face may become puffy and
pale. Sounds a bit of a horror story, but it'll
all resolve once you start on the Thyroxine again. Good
luck
Glenda
Please can you let me know how long the operation to
remove the thyroid lasts?
Thanks. Abby
Hi Abby
I guess the time can vary depending on each individual's
circumstances and even on the surgeon I suppose but mine
took just over three hours.
Hi Glenda
I have Just found your site and read your Q&A page.
I hope the following information will still be of use to
Julie (above). I had a biopsy in 2007 and just to say,
make sure you take someone along with you to your biopsy
to drive you home afterwards. I wasn't told to, but
luckily my mum had come with me, as afterwards I was a
little shaky and not up to
driving. Emma,
Cheshire.
Thanks for your input
Emma. If it is too late to be of use to Julie,
then perhaps somebody else can benefit from
it. Glenda.
